In an intense matchup held in Guadalupe, Mexico, Morocco achieved a stunning victory over the Netherlands in a penalty shootout. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, and Morocco edged out the Dutch 3-2 in the shootout.
The game’s decisive moment came when Morocco’s Ismael Saibari scored the winning penalty. With the shootout tied at 2-all after four rounds, Morocco’s goalkeeper Yassine Bounou made a crucial save on Crysencio Summerville’s attempt by deflecting it with his left hand.
Saibari capitalized on this advantage, sending the ball into the low left corner while Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen moved in the opposite direction. He celebrated by tearing off his shirt and was swarmed by teammates in celebration.
Earlier in the shootout, when Morocco was trailing 1-0, Verbruggen attempted to stop Soufiane Rahimi’s shot. Although he initially seemed to block it, the ball slipped past him, crossing the goal line. Morocco’s head coach Mohamed Ouahbi commented on the fortunate outcome, stating that they give everything they have on the field and sometimes receive something back.
This defeat marked the Netherlands’ earliest World Cup exit. Historically, they have made significant progress in previous World Cups, including a quarterfinal appearance four years ago. Morocco, known for reaching the semifinals as the first African team in 2022, will now face co-host Canada in the Round of 16 on Saturday in Houston. Notably, Morocco had previously beaten Canada 2-1 in the group stage of the 2022 World Cup.
Throughout the match, Morocco maintained a dominant presence, whereas the Netherlands opted to rely on counterattacks. Coach Ouahbi expressed his belief that Morocco has gained respect from opponents, viewing the Netherlands’ style of play as a form of respect.
In regulation time, Cody Gakpo scored in the 72nd minute for the Netherlands, with the assist from Summerville. Gakpo received support from his teammates on the field, having recently experienced personal loss.
Morocco equalized in the 91st minute when Issa Diop connected with a well-placed cross from Chemsdine Talbi, leaving Verbruggen unable to stop the header.
During extra time, neither team had significant scoring chances. Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman attempted to leverage penalty expertise by substituting Justin Kluivert, but he missed.
The Netherlands suffered elimination in a World Cup penalty shootout for the third consecutive time. Earlier Monday, Paraguay eliminated Germany in penalties. Entering this Round of 32 match, Morocco ranked sixth globally, while the Netherlands held the seventh position.
Reflecting on their success, Coach Ouahbi expressed determination for Morocco’s future, emphasizing that no team is unbeatable.
