Chicago White Sox’s Colson Montgomery joined a select group with his third-inning homer against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday. He became the third player in the team’s history to send a ball over the right-field wall onto Eutaw Street at Camden Yards. Adam Dunn and Jeff Liefer previously achieved this in 2013 and 2001, respectively. Montgomery remarked, “I knew I got it pretty good,” reflecting on the power of his swing.
The home run contributed to a seven-run inning for the White Sox, leading to a 9-3 win witnessed by 17,581 attendees. Jacob Gonzalez added two runs with a single, while Junior Perez hit a three-run homer in the third inning. This victory placed the Sox at the top of the American League Central with a 45-39 record, edging two games ahead of the Cleveland Guardians who lost to the Texas Rangers.
The White Sox had a 13-12 record in June, marking their first back-to-back winning months since 2021. Manager Will Venable praised the team’s consistent performance and their ability to avoid lengthy slumps. The win also broke their streak of seven consecutive road series losses.
Pitcher Erick Fedde secured the win, allowing three runs off five hits across five innings. Tyler Schweitzer’s contribution was notable, earning the save by pitching four scoreless innings. This was a first since Keith Foulke’s performance in 1997.
“Honestly, not a lot, but the sweeper was great,” Fedde said about his pitching approach on Tuesday. “Leaned on that. Probably threw that, like 50%.”
Montgomery’s 21st home run of the season, a 440-foot shot, gave Chicago a 3-1 lead. He emphasized his strategic approach to hitting, which resulted in consistent success. His home run made him the 137th player to achieve this feat on Eutaw Street.
Gonzalez and Perez added to the scoring in a standout third inning for the Sox. A double from Gonzalez in the fourth inning pushed the lead further, securing the Sox’s first series win against the Orioles since July 2021.
In other news, the White Sox announced a trade involving minor-league pitcher Ben Peoples to the Texas Rangers in exchange for catcher Ben Hartl. Peoples excelled with a 2.39 ERA in Triple-A, while Hartl showed promise as a consistent performer at High-A level. The trade aims to bolster the Sox’s minor-league lineup with a focus on future potential.
