Colorado Socialist Candidate Melat Kiros Wins Primary: A New Voice in the Democratic Party

3 hours ago 0

Melat Kiros, a rising socialist figure, has emerged victorious in the Colorado primary, defeating a longstanding incumbent. Her platform includes abolishing ICE, Medicare for all, and addressing what she refers to as the ‘genocide in Palestine.’ Significant attention has been drawn to Kiros as a part of the wave of far-left Democratic candidates challenging traditional party norms.

Kiros has been vocal in her criticism of Israel’s influence in the Middle East. In an interview, she suggested that this influence has inspired attacks on Jewish communities worldwide. Her primary win in Colorado’s Denver-area district comes after similar victories by far-left candidates in New York.

Phil Weiser, Colorado’s Attorney General and Democratic gubernatorial candidate, expressed concerns over Kiros’s stance on Israel. He pointed to a previous attack at a pro-Israel rally in Boulder where candidates were questioned about its antisemitic nature. Kiros intends to prioritize combating hate and antisemitism, acknowledging the tragic nature of such attacks.

The Boulder attack involved Mohamed Soliman, who threw incendiary devices at a demonstration, resulting in the death of one person and injury to several others. Soliman, sentenced to life in prison, denied anti-Semitic motives, despite describing Zionism as an ‘enemy.’

Reflecting on her primary campaign, Kiros highlighted her opposition to Israel’s policies. Her remarks have sparked discussions within the Democratic party about its future direction and diversity of views.
