Texas Senate Nominee Faces Criticism Over Use of Christian Morals

4 hours ago 0

James Talarico, the Texas Senate nominee and a Presbyterian seminarian, recently invoked the Bible to support his progressive policies like universal healthcare. He argued that Jesus’ actions and the Hebrew prophets serve as his inspiration.

In a widely circulated post, Talarico stated, “When Jesus healed the sick, he didn’t ask for a deductible. So when I fight for universal healthcare, I’m doing it on biblical grounds.” He elaborated that Jesus did not exploit people for profit and suggested that modern systems should reflect this ethos.

Jim Agresti, president of Just Facts and a Texas preacher, sharply criticized Talarico. Agresti accused Talarico of promoting a distorted form of Christianity. He argued that Talarico opposes Christian nationalism while imposing his own Christian values on the public.

Agresti questioned Talarico’s use of scripture, claiming he misinterprets both the Bible and the U.S. Constitution. Agresti noted, “In every single instance, it’s about self-sacrificing generosity.” He highlighted that government handouts do not appear in biblical texts.

Agresti referred to the parable of the Good Samaritan as an example of personal sacrifice without government involvement. He criticized Talarico for advocating government-funded health care, stating it contradicts biblical principles. Agresti also mentioned the national debt issue related to welfare programs.

Agresti compared Talarico to Alexander Hamilton, suggesting both pushed government agendas post-Constitution. He cited Jesus’ warning about “false prophets” to underscore his concerns about Talarico’s approach.

Talarico has previously faced backlash for religious remarks, including statements on God’s non-binary nature and gender issues in sports. This controversy comes as he competes against Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in a closely watched election.

Talarico’s campaign spokesperson, JT Ennis, emphasized Talarico’s dedication to Christian teachings, arguing against the manipulation of scripture for political ends. Ennis stated that Talarico aims to foster unity by encouraging Texans to love their neighbors.
