The United States faces a significant challenge as they prepare for their most critical World Cup match without one of their standout players, Folarin Balogun. He will miss Monday’s Round of 16 game against Belgium following a red card incident in the previous match.
During the encounter against Bosnia, Balogun became entangled with an opponent while contesting a loose ball. This led to an accidental but awkward ankle roll for the opponent. The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) reviewed the play and determined that Balogun’s actions warranted a red card.
The incident not only led to Balogun’s ejection but also left the US team to compete with 10 players. Additionally, this red card suspension means he will not participate in the crucial upcoming match against Belgium.
In his first comments since the incident, Balogun expressed disagreement with the decision. He insisted the foul was unintentional and believed a yellow card would have been a more appropriate punishment. Balogun stressed the difficulty of controlling foot placement in that situation but acknowledged the necessity of moving forward.
“There’s been lots of different emotions. I’ve been upset, I’ve been happy. It’s been surreal to be honest,” Balogun stated. “But for me, it was just important to stay calm. We have to show the correct way to handle things even when you think it’s unjust.”
Despite the ruling, there was no room for appeal. According to the 2026 World Cup regulations, referee decisions on in-play facts are final unless the FIFA Disciplinary Code provides otherwise. Thus, Balogun must miss the Belgium match regardless.
FIFA confirmed that his suspension is limited to this one game. If the United States advances, Balogun will be available for the quarterfinal round.
