In Dearborn, Michigan, a shooting at Fairlane Town Center resulted in the deaths of two people and injured another. The incident unfolded on Friday afternoon, just before the Fourth of July holiday.
Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin revealed that the violence began as a confrontation between two groups who were acquainted. This quickly escalated into gunfire. Police confirmed that members of both groups were armed and stated that the shooting was not a random act.
The shooting took place at about 1:25 p.m. local time. One victim died within the mall while another succumbed to injuries at a nearby hospital. The third victim, also injured, received treatment at a hospital. Police described the victims as young men in their late teens or early 20s.
Panic at the Mall and Evacuation
The gunfire led to panic among shoppers, prompting an evacuation. A video circulating on social media showed people fleeing, triggered by the sound of shots. In the chaos, a person was struck by a vehicle as they ran outside the mall.
Several individuals potentially linked to the incident were questioned, but authorities had not made any immediate arrests. Chief Shahin mentioned there was no clear motive and no indication that the event was related to a robbery.
Authorities assured the public of no additional threat as the investigation continued. Michigan State Police assisted local law enforcement, and the mall was expected to remain closed during the investigation.
Chief Shahin expressed disbelief over the occurrence of such violence in a public place like a shopping mall. Fairlane Town Center, situated near Michigan Avenue and Evergreen Road, hosts over 125 stores and restaurants.
Dearborn, with a population exceeding 100,000, lies about nine miles west of Detroit. The police urged anyone with information on the shooting to contact the Dearborn Police Department at 313-943-2240.
