The return of Serena and Venus Williams to Grand Slam doubles tennis was cut short due to injury. The sisters were set to compete at Wimbledon, marking their first doubles appearance together in nearly four years.
Unfortunately, Serena, 44, withdrew because of a knee injury sustained during her singles match earlier in the tournament. In a three-set loss, the injury forced her to opt out of the doubles competition.
“I’m heartbroken to have to withdraw from doubles. Coming back to compete again has been a gift,” Serena expressed on Instagram.
She described her disappointment and shared pictures showing syringes used to drain fluid from her knee. A video accompanied the post, showing Serena with leg strapping and a cane, held by her daughter.
Despite this setback, Serena hinted at future opportunities to play, stating, “All I can say is stay tuned to a city near you.”
At ages 44 and 46, Serena and Venus were scheduled to compete against Camila Osorio and Solana Sierra. Their match was postponed to allow Serena more recovery time. The sisters previously teamed up for doubles at the 2022 US Open, where they were defeated in the first round.
The Williams sisters hold a record of six Wimbledon doubles titles and were last victorious there in 2016. Together, they’ve secured 14 Grand Slam titles and three Olympic gold medals in doubles, never losing a final.
