Miguel Vargas Reflects on His Journey to Becoming an All-Star

Cleveland: Miguel Vargas faced challenging times in 2024. “It was hard,” he admitted on Saturday afternoon. “I wanted to enjoy my time on the field and be myself, but I struggled.” Now, he shines as an All-Star third baseman. “The team has supported me through the years,” Vargas shared. “Their help brought me where I am today, and I’m grateful to be part of this group.”

White Sox third baseman Miguel Vargas hit a solo home run against the Guardians on June 23, 2026, at Rate Field. He will represent the Chicago White Sox on the American League roster in the All-Star Game on July 14 in Philadelphia, following the roster announcement on Saturday evening.

“Achieving this means a lot,” Vargas expressed. “I’ve worked hard, and it’s rewarding to see results. While many teammates deserve All-Star recognition, I am proud to represent them.”

Vargas is the first Sox third baseman named to the All-Star team since Joe Crede in 2008. His predecessors include Robin Ventura (1992), Bill Melton (1971), George Kell (1954), and Jimmy Dykes (1934).

“I’m thrilled for Vargas,” said manager Will Venable. “His character shines through both in the clubhouse and on the field. Even before discussing his outstanding performance, his qualities reflect the spirit of our club.”

Vargas entered Saturday’s contest against the Cleveland Guardians with a .248 batting average, a .359 on-base percentage, and a .495 slugging percentage. He had 20 home runs and 55 RBIs in 86 games. His 3.2 fWAR ranked him 18th in MLB and 13th among position players.

“Reflecting on my journey, this achievement means a lot,” Vargas said. “The coaching staff and teammates supported me and helped me grow.” He struggled in 2024, hitting .104 in 42 games after joining the Sox from the Los Angeles Dodgers. He improved last season, batting .234 with 16 home runs and 60 RBIs in 138 games.

This year, Vargas leads major-league third basemen in runs (58) and walks (51). He ties for first in RBIs and ranks second in home runs, OPS (.854), and slugging percentage, plus third in weighted runs created.

“In 2025, Vargas had impressive stretches,” Venable noted. “We saw his potential, and he worked hard during the offseason on his body and swing. He has maintained his performance consistently.” Venable expressed disappointment that the Sox didn’t have multiple players on the AL roster.

“I’m upset about it,” Venable admitted. “We have many deserving candidates. The team has performed well and should be recognized. However, our roster contributions come from diverse players. Hopefully, more players will be added as replacements.”

“Vargas is a unique player,” Venable said. “His balance between a relaxed demeanor and fierce competitiveness is remarkable.”

Vargas’s qualities led to his first All-Star selection. “I appreciate my teammates, the front office, coaching staff, and Chicago fans,” Vargas acknowledged. “Their support means a lot. This is a special moment for my family too, and I want to share it with them.”
