Attendance at Fourth of July Events: Challenges in Comparison

2 hours ago 0

On Saturday night, President Donald Trump addressed over 150,000 people on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. His remarks came after a weather delay, with some attendees leaving early. Comparing crowds at Independence Day events to past presidencies is complex. Unlike campaign rallies, these events are typically exclusive to invited guests, and official attendance numbers are rare.

After Trump’s speech, many expected comparisons to former Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden’s appearances. Trump often claims larger crowds than his rivals, adding to this scrutiny.

Trump’s ‘Salute to America’ Crowd

Trump addressed attendees who returned post-storm to mark the Fourth of July in the capital. Initial estimates suggested 375,000 people were at the venue before the National Mall evacuation. Newsweek couldn’t verify these figures immediately. However, a large group holding flags and banners attended when Trump spoke around 11 p.m. ET. Reports indicate almost every seat was occupied.

Comparing July 4 Crowd Sizes

Obama’s celebrations usually involved military families at the White House. In 2016, Obama mentioned plans for about 5,000 attendees. Biden has generally followed this model. In 2024, he remarked that 7,000 people were waiting during a White House event, but this wasn’t an official count. Reports counted several thousand guests.

Conversely, Trump’s events often occur in larger, public places. In 2020, amid COVID-19, his Mount Rushmore speech had approximately 7,500 attendees. His 2019 National Mall address was a televised event with military flyovers and fireworks, significantly contrasting past presidents’ limited-space gatherings.

Challenges in Attendance Comparisons

Accurate attendance figures are elusive. The National Park Service no longer provides estimates for the National Mall events, leaving no definitive attendance for 2019’s celebration.

Estimates at that time indicated thousands were present. Washington’s Metro recorded over 400,000 trips on July 4, and the Pentagon distributed 5,000 tickets, yet these do not sum up total attendance.

This data scarcity highlights the difficulty of comparing event sizes. Differing venues, security needs, and ticketing processes make each event unique. Reliable data suggests Obama’s 2016 event planned for around 5,000 guests, Trump’s 2020 speech drew about 7,500, and Biden’s gatherings attracted thousands. Still, no official count exists for events like Trump’s 2019 address, making those figures disputable.

The America250 Initiative

America250 commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence signing in 1776. Congress established the bipartisan America250 Commission in 2016 to organize national celebrations and educational events for this milestone.

The observance includes various programs led by numerous organizations. The America250 Commission organizes alongside Freedom 250, an initiative from the Trump administration for federal celebrations.

Changes to the Great American State Fair

The Great American State Fair initially promised participation from all 50 states and U.S. territories. However, participation adjustments surfaced as several states opted out due to political concerns and costs, shifting reliance on private partners and exhibits in place of unifying state representation.

Despite alterations, the fair remains central to the anniversary celebrations. The 16-day expo features state-themed pavilions, cultural displays, live entertainment, military exhibits, educational programming, and attracts visitors to the National Mall stretching between the U.S. Capitol and Washington Monument.
