On July 4, 2026, President Trump delivered a speech to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence. He spoke in Washington, D.C., following a severe weather-induced delay that caused a two-hour evacuation of the National Mall. The speech intertwined politics, patriotism, and history.

The president paid tribute to veterans, highlighting several from World War II. He also honored one of the first Black officers to lead a Special Forces team in combat in Vietnam, and William Harvey Carney, a former enslaved man who joined the Civil War as a Union soldier and became the first Black recipient of the Medal of Honor.

In addition to celebrating historic military achievements, President Trump included two of his own. He spoke about military actions involving Venezuela and Iran, comparing them to the sinking of a Spanish fleet at Manila Bay. He described the defeat of the Iranian navy, involving 159 ships, as a significant victory.

President Trump used the speech to attack communism, suggesting it remains a threat within the United States. He likened communism to a disease that must be eradicated. Some interpreted his rhetoric as targeting Democrats ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.

During the “Salute to America” event, President Trump also advocated for the SAVE America ACT. This proposed legislation would require voters to provide proof of citizenship for registration and present ID before voting. He assured that such measures would prevent cheating in elections.

The president acknowledged NASA astronauts, police officers, and farmers, predicting that the 250th anniversary was merely the beginning of America’s “golden age.” He expressed optimism, stating, “the best is yet to come.”
