The Los Angeles Lakers have been active this offseason, focusing on roster changes beyond retaining LeBron James. A major move includes signing Austin Reaves to a four-year, maximum contract. Additionally, the team is trading key players to modify their lineup.
New Additions and Trades
Recently, NBA insider Shams Charania reported the Lakers’ decision to trade several future draft picks for Walker Kessler, a center from the Utah Jazz. The intention is to sign Kessler to a significant four-year, $130 million contract, making him the starting center. This move indicates a shift in the team’s strategy.
In another major trade, they sent Deandre Ayton, their former starting center, to the Washington Wizards. In return, they acquired guard Jaden Hardy and additional draft picks. This trade suggests a re-evaluation of the team’s player dynamics.
Backup Center Options
The focus now shifts to finding a suitable backup for Walker Kessler. While the Lakers have undrafted rookies such as William Kyle III from Syracuse and Robbie Avila from Saint Louis, veteran experience might be more beneficial.
According to Charania’s report, the Lakers are considering Andre Drummond, Kevon Looney, and Jonas Valanciunas as potential backup centers post-Ayton trade.
Each candidate has considerable experience and capabilities. Jonas Valanciunas, at 34 years old, completed his 14th season recently, playing for the Denver Nuggets. He maintained an average of 8.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game, with a 58.2% field goal success rate.
Andre Drummond, also in his 14th season, played as a backup for Joel Embiid at the Philadelphia 76ers. His averages included 6.4 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game, with a 47.2% field goal percentage.
Kerron Looney, the youngest option at 30, spent last season with the New Orleans Pelicans. His stats for the season were 2.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game, with a 41.7% field goal percentage. Looney’s experience with the Golden State Warriors, where he contributed to three NBA championships, might be appealing to the Lakers.
The Lakers aim to strengthen their core lineup with Luka Doncic, Reaves, and Kessler, hoping to compete effectively against Western Conference teams such as the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder. Selecting any of these experienced big men could also provide vital depth, addressing a long-standing roster challenge.
