Father and Son Row for Veteran Mental Health

British Royal Marine veteran Tim Crockett and his son, Harrison, undertook a significant challenge to row across the Pacific Ocean. This journey was documented in their project, Tame the Kraken. The pair’s mission focused on preventing veteran suicide and raising awareness about mental health challenges faced by veterans. To amplify their message, they joined forces with Storybones Media CEO Heidi Collins.

Kelsey Pfendler’s Record-Breaking Journey

Grand Canyon rafting guide Kelsey Pfendler set a new record with a solo row across the Pacific Ocean. She completed a 2,400-mile trip from California, arriving in Hawaii in just under 44 days. Her arrival at Honolulu Harbor was met with hundreds of supporters celebrating her accomplishment.

Pfendler launched her journey from Monterey, California, with the aim of becoming the first American woman, the youngest woman, and the fastest woman to row solo across the mid-Pacific. She achieved these milestones and exceeded previous records maintained by the Ocean Rowing Society International. Her time of just under 44 days shattered the women’s record of 86 days and the men’s record of 52 days.

Challenges and Triumphs at Sea

Throughout the journey, Pfendler shared her experiences via social media. Her documentation included physical and mental struggles faced while crossing one of the world’s vast oceans. Her updates depicted blistered hands, sleepless nights, and the daily routines essential for survival at sea, such as creating fresh water and cooking meals.

Despite these challenges, Pfendler maintained a sense of humor, sharing moments like joking about her tan lines and her reliance on caffeine pills. She expressed a love for boats and the solitude they offer.

Inspiring Others

As she approached Oahu, Pfendler expressed her hope to inspire others. She wanted her journey to motivate people to tackle challenges they might otherwise deem unreachable. “If any part of this made at least one person feel more powerful, I’m happy,” she noted.

Professionally, Pfendler has been a river guide since age 18 and has led numerous rafting trips through the Grand Canyon.
