Concerns about drones near airports are growing as a recent incident involved a JetBlue flight struck near JFK Airport. Host Cheryl Casone highlighted the danger drones pose, especially without transponders that allow tracking. The FAA, facing about 100 complaints monthly, has initiated a public safety campaign with interference fines reaching up to $100,000.
In another incident, Delta Air Lines Flight 1076 was hit by a fireworks mortar while descending into Chicago Midway International Airport on July 4, according to the FAA. The flight, operating an Airbus A319, departed from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport at 7:51 p.m. ET and landed safely at Midway at 8:33 p.m. CT, with no reported injuries.
Despite a non-declared emergency, mechanics performed an inspection at the gate and reported no damage to the aircraft. However, Chicago police noted minor paint damage attributed to the fireworks and stated the aircraft is undergoing further inspection.
The FAA is investigating the incident, but it’s unclear where the fireworks originated or if those responsible have been identified. Delta Air Lines assured cooperation with FAA investigations.
The increasing reports of drone and fireworks incidents highlight the need for enhanced safety measures around airports. These occurrences have sparked greater scrutiny of air traffic safety and the need for authorities to address emerging threats from drones and other aerial hazards.
