Aspen Acres Fire Challenges Containment Efforts in Colorado

59 minutes ago 0

The Aspen Acres Fire continues to create significant challenges in southern Colorado, particularly south of Colorado Springs, spanning Pueblo and Custer counties. As of Sunday morning, the fire had engulfed over 86,000 acres and officials reported it was 13% contained. Authorities have issued evacuation orders and warnings across several counties, including Custer, Pueblo, Huerfano, and Fremont.

According to the National Weather Service, scattered showers and thunderstorms could impact south-central and southwest Colorado on Sunday. While rain might aid firefighting efforts, concerns remain about potential road damage and flash flooding in the areas already burned. The main threats from these storms include gusty winds reaching 50 mph and lightning.

Red flag warnings and air quality alerts have been issued statewide. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment advised residents to minimize outdoor activities due to the dense smoke.

Other wildfires in the state are also posing challenges. The Ferris Fire in southwest Colorado has spread over 42,000 acres and is 7% contained, while the Gold Mountain Fire, in the same region, has affected more than 25,000 acres and remains uncontained.

A memorial service took place on Sunday to honor three firefighters who died fighting wildfires on the Colorado-Utah border on June 27. Emily Barker, Sydney Watson, and Nick Hutcherson lost their lives in a ‘burnover incident,’ a situation where firefighters are surrounded and must seek immediate shelter as a fire surges over them. Two other firefighters survived the incident but suffered burns. In tribute, Colorado Governor Jared Polis ordered flags to be flown at half-staff. Polis praised the fallen firefighters as heroes who charged into danger to protect the community.

Meanwhile, in southern Utah, the Babylon Fire has expanded to more than 90,000 acres without any containment progress as of Sunday afternoon. With prevailing hot and dry conditions expected through Monday, efforts to contain the fire remain arduous.
