A seaplane carrying multiple passengers made a hard landing in New York City’s East River, authorities reported on Sunday. The New York Fire Department (FDNY) responded to the incident around 12:01 p.m. near the marina at East 23rd Street and FDR Drive in Manhattan. FDNY units rescued at least eight individuals from the aircraft. Two people received evaluations for minor injuries, though one declined medical treatment, according to the New York Police Department (NYPD).
The seaplane, which had departed from the Hamptons, was later seen being towed back to the dock while upright, as stated by FDNY officials. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced plans for an investigation following the hard landing of a Kodiak 100 seaplane around noon local time on Sunday, which resulted in a snapped wing strut—a vital support connecting the wing to the plane’s body.
The FAA is set to release a preliminary accident report this week. Notably, another seaplane encountered trouble in the East River three weeks ago. On June 13, the FDNY assisted a pilot and passenger after their seaplane went down near Whitestone, Queens, with no reported injuries from that occurrence.
