Balogun Cleared to Play in World Cup Round of 16

Folarin Balogun, a key player for the United States men’s soccer team, is set to join the upcoming World Cup Round of 16 match against Belgium. The game is scheduled for Monday in Seattle.

Balogun, aged 20, had originally been handed a one-game suspension following a red card incident during the team’s recent 2-0 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina on Wednesday in Santa Clara, California. This punishment was imposed after he stepped on the ankle of Bosnian player Tarik Muharemović.

In a statement on Sunday, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee announced a change to Balogun’s suspension. The committee agreed to suspend the implementation of the match ban for a probationary period of one year. Should Balogun commit another infringement of similar severity within this time, the suspension will be automatically enforced in addition to any other penalties for the new offense.

The implementation of the match suspension is suspended for a probationary period of one year. If Folarin Balogun commits another infringement of a similar nature and gravity during the probationary period, the suspension shall be revoked and the sanction enforced without prejudice to any additional sanction imposed for the new infringement.

U.S. Soccer released a statement following the decision, expressing their satisfaction with FIFA’s ruling. They stated, “We accept the decision of the Disciplinary Committee and are pleased that Folarin Balogun is eligible to compete tomorrow. Our full attention is focused on the Round of 16 match against Belgium in Seattle, and we look forward to the continued support of our amazing fans.”

Updates to this story will be provided as new information becomes available.
