Brazil Faces World Cup Heartbreak as Norway Advances

1 hour ago 0

Brazil’s struggle to reclaim World Cup glory persists as they were unable to overcome Norway in the Round of 16. Erling Haaland’s decisive performance played a key role in Brazil’s elimination on Sunday.

The match began with both teams in a stalemate at 0-0 after the first half. Brazil eventually succumbed to Haaland’s prowess. The towering 6-foot-5 striker from Manchester City broke the deadlock at 79 minutes with a skillful header, putting Norway ahead.

Haaland extended Norway’s advantage to 2-0 with another goal in the 90th minute, forcing Brazil into desperation mode as they struggled to mount a comeback. Neymar, Brazil’s 34-year-old veteran, managed to score via a stoppage-time penalty, narrowing the gap. However, Brazil’s efforts were too late, and time ran out. This marked the end of Neymar’s World Cup career.

Following Brazil’s surprising defeat, Neymar was visibly emotional as he remained seated on the field. His teammates, including goalkeeper Alisson Becker, offered their consolation as Neymar processed his final appearance in the tournament. After the match, Neymar confirmed his international retirement, expressing his efforts and reflection on his participation. “I tried. I tried. It started here at MetLife Stadium and I finished here. It is now over,” he shared with Fox Sports.

Neymar’s journey in international football began at MetLife Stadium against the United States Men’s National Team in 2010. He debuted by scoring a goal in a victorious 2-0 match. His World Cup ventures spanned four tournaments, including 2014, 2018, 2022, and 2026. Over these appearances, Neymar played 15 matches, accumulating 1,224 minutes, scoring nine goals, and assisting on four occasions.

In 2014, Brazil advanced to the semifinals with Neymar securing the Bronze Boot. The subsequent World Cups in 2018 and 2022 resulted in quarterfinal eliminations. Presently, Neymar continues his club career with Santos in Brazil Serie A, where he has netted four goals and provided two assists in eight starts this season.

Brazil’s quest for their sixth World Cup triumph now extends beyond 2002, leaving their aspirations unfulfilled for another four years. Meanwhile, Norway emerges as a formidable contender, progressing to face the winner of the Mexico and England clash on Saturday, July 11, in the quarterfinals.
