FIFA Overturns Suspension of US Soccer Star Amid Controversy

2 hours ago 0

FIFA has reversed the suspension of Team USA soccer player Folarin Balogun, enabling him to compete in the key match against Belgium. The Belgian team plans to contest this decision, adding more uncertainty hours before the game.

The U.S. Soccer Federation faced suspensions of two important members before the World Cup match against Belgium. Reports identified team manager Sam Zapatka and Vice President of Security Frank Pannell among those barred. The U.S. suffered a 4-1 loss, ending their 2026 World Cup journey.

FIFA did not explain the suspensions. Sources indicated they related to incidents during Team USA’s previous victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina. Allegedly, there were violations of match protocols, including entry into restricted areas. However, no physical conflicts were reported.

Even though U.S. Soccer did not disclose the reasons for the suspensions, they clarified that it was unrelated to Balogun’s red-card appeal. Despite Belgium’s challenge against lifting Balogun’s suspension, FIFA maintained its decision, allowing him to play.

Former President Donald Trump commented on the incident, claiming he spoke with FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Trump disagreed with the red card decision, describing it as a clash between two athletes rather than a foul.

Following their victory over the U.S., Belgium progressed to the quarterfinals, set to play against Spain at Los Angeles Stadium.
