Parasitic Illness Outbreak in Michigan Linked to Potential Produce Source

Health officials in Michigan are investigating a parasitic illness outbreak potentially tied to lettuce or salad greens. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) noted that the investigation is ongoing and has not yet identified a specific source. Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian from MDHHS emphasized the possibility of lettuce being a common factor in ongoing investigations. She encouraged residents to be cautious and informed about the potential risks.

Officials recommend buying whole heads of lettuce rather than pre-washed options. It’s advisable to discard the outer layers and thoroughly wash the rest. Cooking greens at a temperature of at least 158 degrees can also reduce the risk of infection.

The outbreak, which started in late June, has resulted in 2,640 cases across Michigan, significantly higher than the typical 50 annual cases. More than 40 individuals required hospitalization. Cases have also appeared in other Midwest states, adding to the complexity of identifying the origin due to widespread food distribution.

Dr. Ambreen Malik highlighted the challenge, citing the extensive nature of national and international food networks. Cyclospora cayetanensis, the parasite responsible for cyclosporiasis, is generally transmitted via feces-contaminated food or water, not from person to person.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has linked similar outbreaks in the U.S. to various produce, including basil and raspberries. Infected individuals may experience symptoms ranging from watery diarrhea to cramps and fever. Quick consultation with a healthcare provider is advised if symptoms appear. Diagnosis requires stool samples, and antibiotics can treat the condition.

Health officials stress the importance of washing all fruits and vegetables under running water. Firm produce should be scrubbed with a brush, and damaged parts removed before consumption. Proper storage by refrigerating cut or cooked produce as soon as possible is also essential.
