Record-Breaking Sale of ‘Gus’ the T. rex Fossil

The fossil of a Tyrannosaurus rex, named ‘Gus,’ sold for a record $50.1 million on Tuesday. Auctioned by Sotheby’s in New York, this 67-million-year-old specimen is now the most expensive set of dinosaur bones ever sold. Previously, the record was held by a T. rex skeleton called ‘Stan,’ which sold for nearly $32 million in 2020. Gus surpassed a $45 million stegosaurus sold by Sotheby’s in 2024.

‘Gus’ stands 12 ½ feet tall and is 38 feet long. He is 63% complete, featuring a well-preserved skull with a jaw full of powerful teeth. Notably, his skeleton includes rarely found bones such as the furcula. This fossil was discovered in 2021 on a ranch in South Dakota and named in honor of property owner Gary Licking.

The bidding was intense, lasting ten minutes, with a mystery winner outbidding six others. Sotheby’s estimated ‘Gus’ would fetch $20 to $30 million.

The Society of Vertebrate Paleontology emphasizes the importance of keeping such fossils in public museums for documentation and research. Kristina Curry Rogers stated that many significant advances in paleontology have come long after fossils are collected, thanks to ongoing analysis and technological advancements.

The stegosaurus ‘Apex,’ a previous record-holder, is on long-term loan to the American Museum of Natural History. The T. rex ‘Sue’ resides at the Field Museum in Chicago, and ‘Stan’ is displayed at the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi.
