On a highway in Southern California, a driver narrowly avoided a major accident when unsecured metal pipes from a nearby pickup truck pierced the back of their sedan. The incident happened on Thursday in Orange County and involved a white pickup truck colliding with a gray sedan. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) Santa Ana Area Office investigated the crash.
According to CHP, the pickup was carrying metal pipes that crashed into the sedan, propelling the pipes forward through the sedan’s rear window. Photos show at least six long pipes lodged in the shattered back window, just missing the driver’s side.
Luckily, the driver only sustained minor injuries, despite the potential for much worse. CHP used this crash to remind drivers of the dangers presented by unsecured cargo. They noted that debris from improperly secured loads contributes to many accidents annually, leading to deaths and injuries across the country.
CHP stressed the importance of securing cargo properly. They recommend the use of ropes, netting, bungee cords, or straps, and advised covering loads with sturdy tarps to prevent debris from falling. Avoiding overloading vehicles is also crucial.
Statistics from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety show that road debris contributed to approximately 53,000 crashes every year from 2018 to 2023. These incidents resulted in an average of about 5,500 injuries and 72 deaths annually.
The California Highway Patrol released this information as part of an ongoing effort to improve road safety and prevent similar incidents in the future.
