Rescue and Rehabilitation of Beloved Big Bear Bald Eagle

A bald eagle rescued near Big Bear over the weekend is believed to be Jackie, part of the cherished pair known from a popular nest livestream. The nonprofit organization overseeing the webcam, Friends of Big Bear Valley, announced this connection after reviewing videos and images shared by the public and rescuers.

“Based on available video and photos, it is apparent that the rescued eagle is likely Jackie,” the nonprofit remarked in a Sunday social media post. “She is currently receiving the best care possible.”

The adult bald eagle had been observed on the ground near Dana Point Park on Thursday and Friday. This park is located in Fawnskin, near Big Bear Lake. While grounded, the eagle reportedly engaged in a scuffle with two younger eagles. According to the organization, mobile video footage showed Jackie defending herself by rolling over and utilizing her talons, although she couldn’t fly far.

The organization noted that Jackie, a mainstay of the webcam show since 2015, had been absent from the nest for several days. Viewers have followed Jackie and her mate, Shadow, through both heartbreaking and successful parenting seasons, including raising eaglets. Their most recent fledglings, Sandy and Luna, launched into flight late last month.

The grounded eagle was retrieved by the L.A. County Parks and Recreation San Dimas Raptor Rescue team on Saturday. A statement on Facebook from the agency read, “An exceptional team ensured the bald eagle received the necessary care.” The eagle is now at a specialized rehabilitation center receiving treatment.

Concerned fans expressed anxiety on social media throughout the weekend over the injured eagle. Friends of Big Bear Valley cautioned about misinformation and speculation online regarding the bird’s identity and advised against contacting the rescue agency due to limited resources.

On Instagram, one observer commented on the anxious wait over the weekend due to Jackie’s absence. Another user remarked confidently on a Parks and Recreation Department post, “That’s her, without a doubt. I’ve watched her for two years and know her better than some of my own relatives.”

After the nonprofit identified the eagle as Jackie, a follower expressed hope, saying, “Praying for a speedy recovery so she can return to her family soon!”
