A seaplane crash off the coast of Washington state left several people injured on Thursday, with one individual in critical condition, according to authorities. The incident involved a Kenmore Air seaplane that made an emergency landing before catching fire near Sucia Island in the San Juan Islands.
The U.S. Coast Guard reported that the accident occurred around 5:30 p.m. The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the pilot and 10 passengers aboard the plane were safely rescued from the water.
There are multiple patients with injuries ranging from head injuries to broken bones and lacerations, with 1 patient in critical condition and no reports of fatalities at this time.
This statement from the sheriff’s office outlined the extent of the injuries. The aircraft involved was a de Havilland DHC-3 Otter, which crashed approximately 45 minutes after departing from Lake Union in Seattle.
In reaction to the incident, Kenmore Air has canceled all scheduled flights for Friday. The airline’s CEO, David Gudgel, emphasized their gratitude that all on board were accounted for. He stated, “Our immediate focus is ensuring our passengers and pilot receive the care and support they need.”
Gudgel also extended thanks to the United States Coast Guard, local emergency responders, and all others involved in the rescue and recovery efforts. Kenmore Air has committed to fully cooperating with investigating authorities and providing verified information as it becomes available.
