The editorial published on July 18 titled “The rise and fall of a corporate fad” referenced our research to assert that the intertwining of politics with markets, via corporate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, harmed both spheres. We must clarify our research focus. Our study did not aim to assess whether DEI programs in corporations were detrimental. Instead, our objective was to explore the political influences that have shaped the trajectory of corporate commitments to DEI.
Our findings highlighted the complex political landscape that corporations navigate when adopting DEI initiatives. Various political motives have significantly influenced the adoption and subsequent withdrawal of these commitments. Understanding these dynamics provides insight into the business decisions regarding DEI practices.
This clarification is crucial to avoid misconstruing the purpose and scope of our research. It centers on analyzing how political forces spur changes in corporate DEI approaches, without making value judgments about their impacts on politics or markets.
