Escalating Tensions: Israeli Settlers Attack Palestinian Villages in West Bank

3 weeks ago 0

Early on Sunday, Israeli settlers launched attacks on Palestinian villages across the occupied West Bank. Two mosques were set on fire, and buildings were defaced with graffiti, according to Palestinian officials.

The incidents came after a deadly confrontation on Friday in which four Palestinians and two Israeli soldiers died. The clash occurred in the Palestinian village of Tal, southwest of Nablus, when a group of Israeli settlers, some armed, approached the area. During the confrontation, Palestinians emerged to challenge the settlers. Video footage suggests that a Palestinian individual attempted to seize a settler’s weapon. Local Palestinian authorities accused the settlers of incitement, while the Israeli military acknowledged that shots were exchanged by both sides.

This attack adds to a troubling pattern of violence involving settlers this year, leading to numerous Palestinian deaths and injuries, as reported by the U.N. and the Palestinian Authority.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, facing an upcoming election, has ordered a significant security operation aimed at combating what he describes as terrorism against Israelis. This includes reinforcing military units in the West Bank and canceling military leave. Members of Netanyahu’s government, including far-right finance minister Bezalel Smotrich, have made calls for annexing parts of the West Bank, which Israel has occupied since the 1967 Middle East war.

Palestinian officials reported a series of attacks by settlers on different West Bank villages during the early hours of the morning. Abdel Azim Wadi, head of the Qusra village council, stated that settlers had vandalized a newly completed mosque in his village.

“The mosque was nearly ready to welcome worshippers; they set it ablaze and sprayed Hebrew slogans,” Wadi told reporters. Among the graffiti were phrases like “Jewish revenge” and the name of an Israeli killed in recent violence near Tal.

The Palestinian Authority, responsible for security in parts of the West Bank where the recent shootings occurred, described the events as an organized assault on the Palestinian populace. “Israeli state-backed settler terrorism is intensifying into systematic pogroms,” stated the Palestinian prime minister’s office on social media.

Israeli military personnel dispatched to Qusra discovered signs of arson and graffiti. Troops and police officers are now involved in looking for suspects and gathering evidence. Military officials condemned any harm to religious sites and committed to maintaining order in the region.

An Israeli military representative noted that such violence from Israeli citizens detracts from the military’s primary defense responsibilities. Nonetheless, they reported over 130 arrests over the weekend for various offenses, ranging from arms trafficking to planning attacks.

In related incidents, Palestinian authorities accused settlers of attempting to burn another mosque near Kour, southeast of Tulkarm. Additionally, settlers allegedly attacked Palestinian workers at a stone-cutting facility in Kafr Malik, near Ramallah. Farid Jiyousi from Kour council mentioned that worshippers managed to extinguish a fire at their mosque before extensive damage occurred. Graffiti was found on its walls as well.

Amid a broader security crackdown, Israeli forces detained about 60 Palestinians overnight from Saturday, as reported by the Palestinian Prisoners Club, a group monitoring detainees in Israeli custody.

Globally, most nations and U.N. agencies view Israeli settlements in the West Bank as illegal. Israel disputes this classification. Palestinians envision the West Bank as central to a future sovereign state, while Israel argues a historical and biblical connection to the area. Netanyahu’s administration, opposed to Palestinian statehood, has actively expanded these settlements.

Pope Leo expressed deep concern on Sunday regarding escalating violence and advocated for negotiations. He emphasized respect for religious sites and called for a peaceful political resolution.
