The movement of the USS George Washington from the Pacific to the Middle East has been described as a ‘national security risk’ by a retired commander from the aircraft carrier. The ship, the last aircraft carrier stationed in Asia, joins the U.S. Navy’s response to tensions with Iran. The USS George Washington is slated to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln’s crew after their deployment.
The USS Abraham Lincoln faced scrutiny due to reports of depleted supplies and declining mental health among its 5,000 sailors and Marines who have been on the ship since December. This situation has sparked a debate on the living conditions aboard U.S. Navy vessels. Concerns have arisen about the extensive deployment of the U.S. Navy in the Middle East, potentially leaving it unprepared for future challenges, particularly related to China.
Retired Rear Admiral Mark Montgomery, who once commanded Carrier Strike Group 5 on the Washington, expressed concerns that this shift could weaken the U.S. naval presence in the Pacific for over a year. This gap results from the Washington’s scheduled maintenance after its Middle East mission. He asserted that this move could send an unintended message of weakness to China.
The White House has directed inquiries to the Pentagon, which refrains from discussing topics affecting operational security. Responses from the U.S. Pacific Command remain pending.
President Donald Trump’s administration has urged allies to increase defense spending to counter China’s military advancements. This push aims to redirect U.S. military efforts primarily toward the Indo-Pacific region. The president’s unexpected reduction of military exercises with South Korea has raised questions about the realignment of U.S. military priorities.
Meanwhile, Taiwan’s lawmakers expressed concern over Trump’s handling of arms sales as a diplomatic tool in discussions with China. Beijing views Taiwan as a breakaway province and plans military integration. The longstanding U.S. support for Taiwan, despite not recognizing it diplomatically, remains a point of contention between Washington and Beijing.
Chinese President Xi Jinping is believed to be preparing military forces for potential action against Taiwan by 2027. China’s military strength includes advanced technologies and a growing navy. Greg Poling of the Center for Strategic and International Studies noted that China benefits from the U.S.’s divided attention and the frustration among its allies.
As of Thursday, the Washington had navigated the Singapore Strait according to the U.S. Navy. The vessel was reportedly moving through the Strait of Malacca to reach the Indian Ocean. Previously, the Lincoln followed a similar route when redirected to the Middle East. In recent months, the Washington visited Guam and Vietnam, reflecting its active operational status.
