Kamala Harris Signals 2028 Presidential Intentions Through Progressive Policy Support

Kamala Harris appears to be positioning herself for a possible 2028 presidential run. Her recent outreach to progressive groups indicates this ambition. This strategy includes engagement with pro-Palestinian organizations and figures like New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, addressing internal party conflicts.

Harris has championed new progressive policies. Speaking at the National Urban League Conference in Nashville, she voiced support for expanding the Supreme Court and eliminating the Electoral College. “We must allow for a real conversation about revisiting certain things,” Harris said. She encouraged revisiting the Electoral College’s role, acknowledging that this stance might be controversial.

Harris had previously not campaigned on these issues during her 2024 White House bid, in which she lost both the Electoral College and the popular vote to Donald Trump. However, her current stance aligns with some Democratic criticisms, like Hillary Clinton’s opposition to the Electoral College, which Clinton called an “abomination.”

Harris also expressed interest in expanding the Supreme Court. She compared adding justices to the existing number of district courts, a notable shift from her earlier position that focused on term limits for justices without expanding the court.

Additionally, Harris has advocated for granting statehood to Puerto Rico alongside her previous endorsement of statehood for Washington, D.C.

Despite her openness to these proposals, Harris has not officially declared a 2028 candidacy. “I have not made a decision,” she stated, emphasizing her focus on the midterms.

Her actions, however, suggest preparation for a future presidential campaign. Reports indicate that Democratic insiders view her as the “fairly obvious” frontrunner for 2028.

Further fueling speculation, Harris did not definitively rule out a run when asked about her plans by Rev. Al Sharpton at the National Action Network’s 35th Anniversary Convention. Her response: “I might. I might. I’m thinking about it… I’ll keep you posted.”

Beyond policy proposals, Harris has been meeting with influential progressives, including Congressman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Their private meeting took place during a Black women’s empowerment summit in Chicago.

This series of moves by Harris underscores her efforts to align more closely with the progressive wing of her party, setting the stage for a potential 2028 campaign.
