Expert Warns Against Unregulated Weight-Loss Peptides

Fitness expert Jillian Michaels has issued a stern warning to Americans regarding a dangerous trend involving the purchase of unregulated weight-loss peptides online. These “gray-market” chemical compounds, sourced from foreign manufacturers, carry severe health risks such as heart problems, vision impairment, and hormonal imbalances.

During an interview on the “Fox News Rundown,” Michaels emphasized the importance of consulting a healthcare professional before considering these unapproved substances. “These are significant substances that require further research and a doctor’s guidance,” Michaels stated.

Michaels explained that obtaining peptide drugs online is relatively easy, but consumers often lack information about their origins. She stressed the importance of using these compounds under medical supervision rather than self-administering them.

The federal government is actively addressing illegal sales and misleading marketing of GLP-1 compounds. In March, the FDA sent 30 warning letters to telehealth companies making false claims about compounded GLP-1 products.

FDA Commissioner Marty Makary noted that compounded drugs play a crucial role in addressing shortages and meeting patient needs. However, they should not bypass the FDA’s approval process. The agency highlighted concerns over vendors mislabeling drugs as “for research purposes only.”

Driven by desires for quick weight loss, especially after witnessing extreme body transformations in pop culture, illegal sales of peptides have surged. Michaels pointed out that many people are obtaining these drugs to shed “vanity pounds” for cosmetic reasons.

As more celebrities exhibit gaunt appearances and experience hair loss, Michaels expressed concerns over the serious ramifications. She acknowledged that FDA-approved GLP-1s can be helpful for severe obesity or chronic health conditions under medical supervision but cautioned against using unapproved peptides for minor weight loss.

Michaels pointed to severe side effects like vision loss and suicidal thoughts. Users who stop using unregulated weight-loss compounds often face increased hunger due to hormonal imbalances.

“These substances are no joke,” Michaels warned. “They aren’t tools for vanity purposes and can lead to serious health issues.”
