Sharyn Alfonsi and Scott Pelley Transition to Academia at Columbia Journalism School

Sharyn Alfonsi and Scott Pelley, recently removed from ’60 Minutes,’ will soon begin new roles at Columbia Journalism School. Announced on Monday, both will serve as Journalists in Residence for the upcoming academic year.

The school explained that Alfonsi and Pelley, who lost their jobs amid organizational changes at CBS News under Bari Weiss, would mentor students. Their part-time roles will include advising, delivering lectures, and contributing to the Columbia Journalism Review.

“Their appointments give CJS students access to two journalists whose reporting has shaped the national conversation for decades,” the statement added. Alfonsi and Pelley have covered crucial topics like war, politics, public health, criminal justice, and international affairs.

Jelani Cobb, the dean of the journalism school, initiated the discussion with Pelley shortly after his dismissal in June. Cobb acted promptly, securing their positions well before the official announcement.

“One of the responsibilities of my job is to have an eye out for talent that’s available,” Cobb stated. “The caliber of their investigative work was just unparalleled.”

Alfonsi, who reported for ’60 Minutes’ for over a decade, expressed her enthusiasm for the opportunity, emphasizing the importance of in-depth and fearless reporting. “I’m excited to work with the next generation of journalists eager to hold power accountable,” she remarked.

Pelley, with a notable career spanning over 37 years at CBS, underlined the critical role of a free press. “Columbia is leading the way in training the next generation of great journalists, and I am honored to join Sharyn in this vital cause,” he affirmed.

Besides mentoring, Alfonsi and Pelley will engage in a dialogue on November 11, moderated by Dean Cobb. The discussion will explore their significant career stories, ethical challenges they faced, and lessons learned.
