Thomas Matthew Crooks, involved in an assassination attempt on President Donald Trump during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, sent cryptic messages months before the incident. Records obtained by Judicial Watch show these communication patterns.
Coded Messages Revealed
On February 9, 2023, Crooks exchanged texts with an ‘unknown contact.’ They discussed 3D printing parts, with Crooks confirming all parts except fan blades were printed. The unknown contact commented, ‘Woah, that looks cool.’
Peculiar Messaging Patterns
From May 21, 2023, to January 3, 2024, Crooks sent odd messages like ‘Hello…Hello red…Yolo…red.’ The FBI redacted responses from the recipient.
Background and Investigation
Crooks is a 20-year-old from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, with a history of interest in 3D printing. He once tried to create a Glock 19 using a printer. His father forbade its use, fearing it would explode.
Drone Photography and Other Interests
Between February 6-27, 2024, Crooks captured drone images of PNC Park and Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh.
Documents show a DHL package from Hong Kong, indicating potential international connections.
Consequences of the Assassination Attempt
During the failed attack, two civilians were killed. Corey Comperatore, a fire chief, died attempting to shield his family. James Copenhaver, a 76-year-old veteran, suffered gunshot wounds leading to organ damage. He passed away in 2026 due to complications from his injuries.
Judicial Watch president Tom Fitton emphasized the need for the FBI to provide a comprehensive report on the investigation due to the recent death of James Copenhaver.
