Technology plays an integral role in American education, yet educators are feeling the pressure. A Pew Research Center survey indicates 84 percent of K-12 teachers lack adequate time for essential tasks such as grading and lesson planning. This challenge impacts how schools should approach new technologies. The issue grows as artificial intelligence becomes part of classrooms and administration. Another Pew survey found that 25 percent of teachers see AI as harmful to education, while only 6 percent view it as beneficial. Despite this uncertainty, technology adoption continues to grow, raising questions about its impact on education.

Cybersecurity adds complexity. The U.S. Department of Education notes that school districts face about five cyber incidents weekly. Schools depend heavily on digital systems for instruction and operations, making security and privacy central to technology decisions. With the focus shifting from adding more technology to evaluating existing systems, the question surfaces: are these systems truly supporting educational operations?

Infrastructure has become the focal concern. It’s not whether schools have sufficient software, but whether they adequately reflect teaching, collaboration, and school operations. Nathan Stark, who spent 16 years in schools before founding FolioBridge, emphasizes this need. He observed teachers juggling multiple platforms just to complete daily tasks. Stark advocates for greater teacher involvement in technology development, as they directly face its challenges. He stresses the importance of respecting teachers’ time, pointing out that routine meetings and administrative tasks often consume valuable hours. This principle also applies to AI. Stark sees potential in using AI to tailor lessons for students when properly integrated. Schools should scrutinize automated systems carefully, especially when they affect student evaluations. A supportive infrastructure should facilitate teacher collaboration, reduce administrative hurdles, and connect educators beyond their immediate environment.

For education leaders, intentionality is key. Each new platform means decisions about attention, security, and workflow. Schools must consider whether each addition enhances the teaching environment. Future competitive advantages might lie in systems that streamline educator tasks and maximize student support. Stark underscores this by stating, “Teachers have always been the foundation of great schools. Technology delivers its greatest value when it removes obstacles, strengthens collaboration, and gives educators more capacity to focus on students.”
