Joan Jett, the rock legend, has taken a break from performing due to a severe injury that required surgery. The 67-year-old singer’s team announced via her Instagram Story that her band, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, canceled their September 2026 shows.
An official statement shared through Rolling Stone revealed, “Joan Jett has undergone orthopedic surgery on a fractured vertebrae. She will focus on recovery and physical therapy.” This decision affects the upcoming performances in Costa Mesa, California, and Louisville, Kentucky.
“Joan will not perform at her forthcoming shows due to her recent surgery,” the statement added. “She looks forward to returning for more concerts.”
The specifics of Jett’s injury remain undisclosed. Her representatives have yet to comment.
The Pacific Amphitheatre in Costa Mesa supported Jett’s decision, announcing that Cheap Trick will perform in her place with X as the opening act. Fans have the option to keep their tickets or request a refund.
Joan Jett’s Louisville concert was intended to kick off the Bourbon & Beyond festival, featuring acts like the Foo Fighters and Kacey Musgraves.
Since the 1970s, Jett has gained international fame. She initially rose to prominence with the all-female rock band, The Runaways. Later, she achieved success with Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, known for hits such as “I Love Rock ’n Roll” and “Bad Reputation.” The band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.
In recent years, the band has released new music and toured extensively. Their latest endeavors include the acoustic album “Changeup” in 2022 and an EP called “Mindsets” in 2023.
The band’s current lineup is Joan Jett, Dougie Needles, Hal B. Selzer, Michael McDermott, and Kenny Laguna. They recently returned from their first U.K. headline tour in 16 years.
Jett has previously acknowledged the physical demands of touring. She adapted her fitness routine to maintain strength and manage the effects of aging. “I never had to work out, but now it’s vital,” Jett stated in a 2025 interview with USA Today. She focuses on walking, weights, and core exercises to stay fit.
