Deion Sanders’ Availability in Question for Colorado’s Season Opener

40 minutes ago 0

The Colorado Buffaloes face potential challenges as their season opener against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets approaches. A significant issue involves head coach Deion Sanders’ availability due to an impending legal obligation.

Deion Sanders might be compelled to testify in a bankruptcy case concerning his son, Shilo Sanders. The court proceedings are scheduled from August 31 through September 4. Judge concerns about a conflict with the team’s game have been noted, with Deion potentially contesting the subpoena as reported by Brent Schrotenboer from USA Today.

The Colorado Buffaloes’ season begins on September 3. This timeframe coincides with the team’s preparation to travel for the game against Georgia Tech. There’s uncertainty about whether Deion will be present during these key preparations or the game itself.

Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk suggested that a compromise might be possible. Deion could provide a videotaped testimony, thus maintaining his focus on the game preparations. But this depends on the willingness of both legal sides to cooperate. Absent this cooperation, Deion might need to leave practices and meetings for court duties in Denver.

The University of Colorado has remained silent on these developments, not responding to inquiries from various media sources.

Having Deion Sanders on the sidelines for the game against Georgia Tech is crucial for the Buffaloes. Last season, the team ended with a 3-9 record, struggling without key players Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter. As Deion signed a five-year, $54 million contract extension, he experiences heightened pressure to secure victories and bowl appearances.

In his three seasons at Colorado, Deion holds a 16-21 overall record, with 9-18 in Big 12 matchups. The team has reached one bowl game under his leadership, the 2024 Alamo Bowl, where they suffered a 36-14 defeat to BYU.

Critics have pointed out that without Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter, Deion’s coaching record drops to 7-12, contrasting his 36-15 record with them. This adds to the pressure on him for the upcoming game and season.
