In a tense exchange in the Oval Office, President Donald Trump instructed a CNN reporter to be quiet, labeling her as ‘disrespectful’ when she persistently tried to question him about South Korea.
Following Trump’s remarks, CNN responded. The network supported its White House correspondent, Kristen Holmes, after Trump’s Rapid Response Team criticized her. Holmes had asked Trump for his thoughts on statements by Sen. Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., who suggested Trump preferred social activities over official duties. Trump dismissed the senator’s comments by comparing him to “Pee-wee Herman.”
An account managed by the White House criticized Holmes for mentioning Ossoff’s comments, which had sparked online speculation by critics. The account condemned Holmes, accusing her of taking unfair shots at Trump’s staffers during the lifeguard-hosting event at the Oval Office.
The president held the meeting with 16-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams and 10-year-old Nathaniel Rai, who Williams had rescued previously. Trump’s response to Holmes’ questioning involved repeatedly urging her to be quiet and accusing her of being ‘fake news.’
CNN’s statement defended Holmes, describing her as a respected journalist covering the White House. The network emphasized that Holmes was performing her job by posing significant questions for the American public. CNN condemned personal attacks on journalists, asserting they undermine the free press’s role.
The White House referred to its social media statements without further commenting. During the Oval Office event, Trump interacted with Williams and Rai, with Ryder’s recent heroic actions gaining admiration. However, Trump targeted Holmes, labeling her as ‘fake news’ and repeatedly telling her to be silent in front of the young visitors.
