Before air conditioning became common in the United States, especially as temperatures began rising, those living in the Southwest faced extreme heat daily. The conditions called for innovative solutions. Some residents slept outdoors under damp sheets, while others adjusted their work schedules to avoid the hottest parts of the day.
A breakthrough emerged with the invention of the ‘swamp cooler.’ Historical records show that ancient civilizations utilized basic cooling techniques. They would fan air over water held in clay pots or jars. In the early 1900s, these principles were adapted in the United States, culminating in the creation of the evaporative cooler, commonly known as the swamp cooler.
Oscar Palmer perfected America’s first evaporative cooling system in 1908 in Arizona. The system works simply: A fan pulls hot air through water-saturated pads, where it evaporates, cooling and slightly humidifying the air before directing it indoors.
By the 1930s, this technology began transforming landscapes across various southwestern states, including New Mexico and Nevada.
Even in today’s world full of air conditioning, swamp coolers provide a practical, energy-efficient cooling option for desert regions. Eric Verpolegen, founder of CoolVeg, explains, “In dry areas like Arizona, they offer considerable cooling”.
Traditional air conditioning didn’t gain popularity in the U.S. until the 1950s, with central systems still considered a luxury. Swamp coolers remain a viable low-cost alternative. Ankit Kalanki of RMI highlights their benefits, noting, “They are energy-efficient solutions where climates permit and are a cost-effective option compared to air conditioning.” The effectiveness diminishes in humid areas, as the air cannot absorb more moisture.
Experts are looking for hybrid solutions to balance humidity control with evaporative cooling. Kalanki points out, “Innovations are being developed that combine evaporative and dehumidifying features, offering more comprehensive cooling.” Swamp coolers still serve as an essential cooling method for many Americans and people globally who lack other options.
The cycle of increased cooling needs in rising temperatures leads to higher energy use, often translating to more greenhouse gas emissions,” Verpolegen warns.
Palmer’s invention, along with modern adaptations, remains relevant. This exploration is part of “American Objects,” a series marking the 250th anniversary of the United States.
