A tragic helicopter crash in northern Kenya resulted in the deaths of five Americans, as confirmed by the U.S. State Department in a statement on Wednesday. The incident occurred in the foothills of Mount Ololokwe, Samburu County, at 9:13 a.m. local time. Seven individuals were on board, and all, including the pilot, perished, according to local police and Kenya’s Civil Aviation Authority.
The U.S. State Department mentioned that the U.S. Embassy is liaising with local authorities to offer consular support. Their spokesperson expressed, “We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones on their loss.”
The search and recovery mission faced challenges due to the area’s difficult terrain and a fire at the crash site. Kenya’s Red Cross reported reinforcing their efforts by dispatching an additional crew from Isiolo to the site.
Lady Lori Kenya, the helicopter operator, confirmed in a social media post that their aircraft was involved in the crash. The company expressed sympathies to those affected and indicated full cooperation with the ongoing investigation.
Video footage, verified by NBC News, displayed aircraft remnants scattered across the foothills, with sections of the wreckage still ablaze.
José Suárez, a notable figure as the president and general manager of various Telemundo-owned stations in Florida, was among those who died. NBCUniversal News Group Chairman, Cesar Conde, identified Suárez in a message to employees. Suárez had a distinguished 20-year career across multiple NBCUniversal stations, where he was celebrated for his leadership and impact.
Additionally, Michele Sensi-Contugi Ycaza, Ecuador’s National Intelligence Center Director General, and his wife Stephany Hollihan Vásconez, were confirmed as victims by Ecuador’s National Assembly. The assembly announced a national mourning period with their flag at half-staff for three days.
