North Korea recently launched an intermediate-range strategic missile. Experts warned that this could bring places like Guam and parts of Alaska within its reach, increasing tensions for the United States and its allies. President Donald Trump has been working to revive diplomacy with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Details of the Launch
Kim Jong Un personally oversaw the missile drill, as reported by North Korean state media. Former U.S. Forces Korea analyst Sydney Seiler noted that the missile’s range has broader implications beyond the Korean Peninsula. The missile, part of a ‘hypersonic strategic weapon system,’ traveled approximately 1,000 kilometers, landing in waters off North Korea’s east coast.
Guam is crucial as a U.S. territory hosting major military installations, including Andersen Air Force Base and Naval Base Guam.
Strategic Concerns
Seiler explained that an intermediate-range ballistic missile, which can travel between 3,000 and 5,000 kilometers, could target Guam, parts of Alaska, and Japan. He cautioned against immediately viewing the launch as a response to Trump’s comments or actions.
Shortly after the launch, Trump highlighted his relationship with Kim Jong Un at a rally in Ohio, emphasizing the importance of maintaining open diplomatic communication with nuclear-capable nations.
North Korea’s Stance
Seiler stated that North Korea is not currently interested in talking, which impacts their decision to continue missile tests. Despite Trump’s efforts to re-engage diplomatically, North Korea’s recent tests happened within a context of halted dialogues with South Korea and declining diplomatic efforts from the United States.
North Korea conducted two short-range ballistic missile tests in late September. U.S., South Korean, and Japanese officials emphasize that these tests violate U.N. Security Council resolutions and pose regional and international risks.
Diplomatic Strategies
Seiler, now a nonresident senior adviser at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, pointed out that North Korea’s actions are about maintaining their missile and nuclear capabilities as diplomatic bargaining chips.
Meanwhile, Trump expressed his continued commitment to engaging with North Korea, potentially using calls or other direct communication forms to help manage future crises.
Complications with Russia
Kim Jong Un’s developing relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin complicates U.S. diplomatic strategies. North Korea’s support for Russia’s military actions in Ukraine diminishes Pyongyang’s incentive to engage with the United States.
The Role of Dennis Rodman
Former NBA player Dennis Rodman, known for his unusual relationship with Kim Jong Un, might offer Trump insights into North Korea. Rodman’s visits and rapport with Kim can provide unique perspectives without diplomatic constraints.
Rodman has accompanied Trump at public events, suggesting possible informal diplomatic ties through personal connections.
Seiler noted that while Rodman offers insights into Kim’s demeanor and potential approaches, substantial diplomatic engagement remains a step away.
