A man from the Bronx, Larry Montes, 46, faces federal hate crime charges after a violent incident at a synagogue in Midtown Manhattan. Federal prosecutors report that Montes admitted to investigators his actions were racially and religiously motivated.

In a recorded interview post-arrest, Montes made antisemitic and derogatory remarks. He allegedly stated, “F— the Jews … It’s racial,” and showed disdain for synagogues both in the area and in Israel.

Montes was charged with two counts of committing hate crimes and one count of destroying religious property causing injury. According to the Justice Department, he could face up to 30 years in prison.

Prosecutors accuse Montes of assaulting two people and yelling obscenities during a Shabbat service at the Central Synagogue in Midtown, which was attended by 375 people. He reportedly stood up during the service, screamed, and damaged two ceremonial silver candlesticks.

Authorities say that as the head of security tried to remove him, Montes shouted, “F— you people” and “I don’t f— with you people,” then physically attacked a female congregant. He also assaulted a security guard during his removal.

Montes allegedly directed a racial slur at the Black security guard, spat at him, and headbutted him. Prosecutors say Montes threatened to return to the synagogue.

Besides the federal charges, Montes faces state charges linked to the incident. New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch noted that those injured, a woman and a security guard, are recovering well.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed his shock, stating the attack would undoubtedly cause pain and fear for the Jewish community during Shabbat services. He emphasized the need for all New Yorkers to practice their faith without fear.

Montes is currently in custody.
