As the Los Angeles primary election approaches, the leading mayoral candidates are intensifying their campaigns across the city. Mayor Karen Bass, seeking reelection, energized labor union crowds on Saturday, alongside prominent local and state Democratic figures.
Meanwhile, City Councilmember Nithya Raman actively engaged with local business owners. In an old-school yellow Scout convertible, Raman visited numerous restaurants and bars, meeting supporters and potential voters. Her policy-focused campaign aims to address small business concerns.
Former reality TV star Spencer Pratt hosted a block party in Baldwin Village. Attendees enjoyed barbecue food, free merchandise, and American-flag lawn chairs. Pratt focused on listening to the concerns of Black residents, including conversations on homelessness and drug addiction.
Recent polls show a tight race, with Bass at 26%, Raman at 25%, and Pratt at 22%. A margin of error of 3% and 10% of undecided voters indicate uncertainty in the outcome.
The two candidates with the most votes will proceed to a November runoff, unless one candidate receives more than 50% of the vote. The election features a ‘jungle primary’ format, meaning all candidates compete on one ballot, regardless of political party affiliation.
In South Los Angeles, Pratt emphasized his role as a community voice, offering personal contact to address residents’ concerns. Conversations revealed skepticism about political promises, with some residents remaining undecided.
Raman continued her outreach on Sunday, participating in volunteer activities and discussing policy goals. Her campaign, lacking major political endorsements or ‘MAGA’ funding, relies on grassroots efforts and volunteer support to connect with voters.
Bass, after a day of labor rallies, connected with supporters at a community event in Eagle Rock. She spoke of past achievements such as the Inside Safe program, which addressed homelessness, and her vision for the city’s future.
Pratt maintained a lower profile on Sunday, opting for smaller, community-focused events instead of high-profile media engagements. His recent appearances included interactions in a Latino neighborhood and a brief media tour in New York City.
