UK Guidelines for Asylum Seekers Highlight Consent and Gender Equality

58 minutes ago 0

The United Kingdom has issued new guidance for asylum seekers to explain laws on consent, gender equality, and domestic abuse. The nine-page document advises against behaviors such as whistling or making kissing noises, making sexual comments, or following someone in public.

One section emphasizes equal rights for men and women as key aspects of British culture. Women are free to travel independently, attend school, choose marriage partners, and earn income. The document states that women do not need permission from a husband, father, brother, or any male figure for these activities.

The Home Office says the guidance aims to help asylum seekers understand expectations in British society, especially when customs differ from their home countries. However, criticism arose from the far-right and anti-immigration Reform party, which labeled it a ‘disgrace.’ Opposition Conservative Party’s shadow home secretary, Chris Philp, also remarked that instead of educating these mainly young male immigrants, they should be deported.

Asylum seekers flee their countries seeking protection and safety. While awaiting decisions about their status, they face restrictions, including not being allowed to work.

Anti-immigrant sentiment is growing in Europe, bolstering far-right populist parties such as the UK’s Reform, France’s National Rally, and Germany’s AfD. In response, centrist parties have toughened their immigration stances to regain voter support, as immigration has risen following conflicts in Africa and the Middle East.

The Home Office reports that 93,525 people sought asylum in the UK in the year up to March 2026. This represents a 12 percent decline from the previous year. A spokesperson noted that returns of failed asylum seekers have reached their highest levels since 2010 under the current government.
