Prince Harry Returns to UK with Meghan and Kids

3 hours ago 0

Prince Harry is returning to the UK with his wife Meghan and their children for an extended stay. This move might help mend the rift with the royal family. Six years ago, the couple decided to step back from their roles as active members of the royalty. They moved to the United States, increasing the distance with Harry’s father, King Charles III, and his older brother, Prince William, the heir to the throne.

Harry didn’t comment on this move at a recent event, but he has shown interest in reconciling to spend more time with his father. The king is receiving treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer. Although details of their return are unclear, the couple enrolled their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, in British schools starting in September, as confirmed by a source.

Living Arrangements

The couple won’t return to royal life. They plan to reside in a private home outside London, maintaining their Montecito residence and a vacation property in Portugal. They will not resume royal duties, having established incomes through deals with Netflix and Spotify. Meghan will continue managing her business, As Ever, from the UK. Harry plans to focus on his UK-based charities.

Jennie Bond, a former royal correspondent for the BBC, speculated that Meghan might be sacrificing for the family’s benefit, as she may not wish to reside in the UK.

King’s Awareness

King Charles was informed of the move only a few days before public announcement. Harry’s UK visits have been sporadic, often involving legal battles with British tabloids. Recent visits with his father have been brief. Last month, Harry, Meghan, and their children visited the UK, spending time with Charles and Queen Camilla. It was the first meeting between the children and their grandfather since Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022.

The announcement caught the king by surprise, with former correspondent Bond commenting on the lack of prior discussion during recent family talks.

Repairing Relationships

Harry has expressed a desire to reconcile with his family. Last year, he stated he wishes to end conflicts, particularly given his father’s health. Yet, mending ties with his brother William might be difficult. The rift widened after Harry and Meghan’s interview with Oprah Winfrey and a Netflix series that criticized palace officials for insensitivity to Meghan’s mental health issues.

Harry’s 2023 memoir “Spare” exacerbated tensions by alleging a physical altercation with William and criticizing Camilla. Peter Hunt, another former royal correspondent, noted that Harry’s move would likely affect William’s response to potential reconciliation efforts.

Security Concerns

Harry has criticized the withdrawal of his police protection during UK visits. His mother’s death haunts him, fearing media intrusion and additional threats. Previously, his security was downgraded to a case-by-case basis, but private security accompanies him on most visits.

Harry had stated he wouldn’t bring his family to the UK without secure arrangements. It remains to be seen if there has been a change in security evaluations or his demands.

Legal Battles

Harry continues a legal struggle with British tabloids over privacy invasion accusations. He obtained a win against the Daily Mirror’s publisher and an apology from The Sun. However, he recently lost a case involving the publisher of the Daily Mail, with significant legal costs looming.
