Pete Hegseth proposes a new policy for the military focused on optimizing natural capabilities. The Pentagon has issued clinical guidelines for a mandatory testosterone deficiency screening for active-duty and reserve service members aged 30 and older. This initiative aims to ensure service members operate at their best by maintaining proper testosterone levels.
Hegseth emphasized the importance of long-term health and resilience, stating that well-managed testosterone levels contribute to strong and capable service members for future deployments and life beyond military service.
Under the new guidelines, men aged 30 and above will undergo routine testosterone blood tests. Men under 30 will be tested upon request or if clinicians detect warning signs. Those with low testosterone may receive further evaluation, with voluntary hormone replacement therapy offered if deemed necessary.
Women are exempt from routine testosterone tests but will be screened for fatigue and menstrual disruptions linked to hormonal imbalances and energy availability issues. Guidelines also address off-label testosterone prescriptions in women, particularly postmenopausal women with low sexual desire.
The military strictly prohibits non-medical testosterone use for performance enhancement. The standardized screening and treatment aim to enhance military readiness by managing hormonal and energy-related issues.
However, some medical experts warn that extensive testosterone testing might result in unnecessary or harmful treatments, citing a lack of evidence that universal screening would improve military performance. The Food and Drug Administration plans a meeting with experts to review the medical use of testosterone.
