Expansion of AI-Powered Private Schools Across the U.S.

2 weeks ago 0

A private school network is replacing traditional classroom instruction with artificial intelligence (AI) and adaptive learning software. This network is growing rapidly across the United States, with campuses currently in operation or soon to open in 16 states. Alpha School, as they are known, describes themselves as “AI-powered.” Students complete essential academic subjects using personalized software, while staff members, referred to as “guides,” provide motivation, mentoring, and support instead of traditional lecturing.

The network’s newest addition is in Chicago, offering a pre-K through eighth-grade campus with an annual tuition fee of $55,000. Alpha’s approach revolves around a “2-Hour Learning model.” Students dedicate around two hours each morning to core subjects using AI-assisted programs, which adapt to their specific level and pace. Afternoons focus on workshops covering various areas such as public speaking, entrepreneurship, leadership, coding, and financial literacy.

Alpha argues their model allows students to learn academics more effectively, providing more time for practical skill development. The Alpha website claims, “Your kids can accomplish twice as much if they’re not sitting in a one-size-fits-all classroom for 6 hours.” While human educators are still present on campuses, their roles have shifted. Guides aim to motivate students, assist them in setting goals, and support broader development, while software takes care of direct academic instruction.

The company states its students demonstrate academic growth 2.6 times faster than their peers on nationally normed Measures of Academic Progress assessments. Despite Alpha’s claims of greater efficiency in completing academic work via AI, some education experts express caution. They note limited evidence for entirely AI-focused schooling. Research indicates AI tutoring can enhance learning and provide personalized instruction, yet organizations like UNESCO warn of risks related to privacy, critical-thinking skills, and reduced human interaction. Many researchers argue AI is most effective when combined with educators rather than as their replacement.

Alpha’s expansion occurs amid concerns over declining reading levels and AI’s role in classrooms. Recently, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development published the PISA 2025 Results, showing American students’ reading scores near a 25-year low, and math scores among the lowest since the assessment began in 2000. The Program for International Student Assessment, administered every three years to 15-year-olds worldwide, included approximately 4,600 participants in the U.S. last year.
