Bear Attack in Northern California Leaves Couple Injured and Dog Fatally Wounded

1 week ago 0

A late-night encounter with a black bear turned tragic for a couple in Northern California. The bear mauled the homeowners, leaving them hospitalized and resulted in the death of their French bulldog, Cassie, who tried to protect them during the attack.

In the early hours of September 19, Cassie barked, prompting Jeff Wilson to check the backyard of their Trinity County home. Upon opening the door, a cinnamon-colored black bear lunged at him. The noise awakened his wife, Mallory, who was also attacked when she went outside.

“I think the bear was startled by us just as much as we were startled by it,” Wilson shared with Redheaded Blackbelt.

During the assault, Cassie attempted to shield Wilson, but the bear grabbed her. Despite their injuries, the Wilsons frightened the bear away and managed to save Cassie.

The couple rushed Cassie for emergency treatment, where she underwent surgery for multiple wounds, including some along her spine. Sadly, the dog passed away two days later.

The GoFundMe page describes Cassie as a deeply loved family member. Jeff and Mallory Wilson continue to face medical treatment, with Jeff suffering two broken ribs and numerous wounds, while Mallory sustained serious injuries, including wounds to her face and head.

The couple owns Radio Ranch, an off-the-grid “glamping” retreat. They chose to live in Northern California, valuing the proximity to nature. They expressed their respect for wildlife, despite the unprecedented attack.

As they recover, the Wilsons have canceled reservations at Radio Ranch and are cooperating with an investigation by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). Tips include securing food and bear attractants around homes.

A fundraiser was launched to aid with the couple’s medical bills, veterinary costs, and property damage, raising over $16,000 out of a $20,000 goal.

Bear attacks on humans are rare in California. The CDFW advises that if a black bear attacks, individuals should fight back instead of playing dead.

This incident is part of a series of recent high-profile bear encounters in the region.
