Cornell University Faces Faculty Vote Amid Campus Protests on Assault Allegations

2 hours ago 0

Faculty members at Cornell University are considering a vote of no confidence in the university’s administration. This decision arises as students protest over sexual assault allegations involving members of a campus fraternity.

The no-confidence resolution has already gained support from 40 of the 75 members of the faculty senate. Professor Paul Ortiz, who sponsors the resolution, highlights growing concerns among faculty and students. Ortiz notes, “Cornell colleagues demanded action, and students have expressed fear for their safety due to persistent issues of sexual assault on campus.”

Allegations at the Center

Protests are happening on Ho Plaza in response to sexual assault allegations dating back to 2024. Members of the Chi Phi fraternity face accusations in a lawsuit of drugging and assaulting a student, known under the pseudonym Jane Doe. She reports being pressured into drug use and subsequently assaulted, though the accused deny any wrongdoing. The lawsuit presents conflicting accounts, with some claiming consensual encounters.

No criminal charges have been filed against the fraternity members. However, the New York Attorney General, Letitia James, has launched a criminal investigation, supported by Governor Kathy Hochul. An independent review is also underway to evaluate the university’s response.

University’s Response

Cornell President Michael Kotlikoff addressed these concerns during a campus assembly. He assured students of transparency and promised new proposals to tackle the issue of campus sexual assault. Despite calls for his resignation, Kotlikoff remains committed to his position.

Discrepancies in accounts form a significant challenge, with differing narratives between the lawsuit and statements made shortly after the alleged incident. Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten indicates that the initial statement from Jane Doe pointed to voluntary participation in the events of that night, creating a complex legal environment.
