The mother of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, an Israeli American, shared insights into her son’s life with NBC News. Despite being described as ‘ordinary,’ Hersh’s story captures a unique essence cherished by his family.
Rachel Goldberg-Polin reflected on the tendency to mythologize individuals who suffer tragic fates, especially when young people are involved. However, she expressed that Hersh was simply the ‘perfect match’ for her, appreciating both his beauty and his imperfections.
Hersh’s journey ended in September 2024 when he was among six hostages held by Hamas. Their bodies were discovered in a tunnel beneath Gaza’s southern city of Rafah. His life began in the United States, but at the age of seven, he relocated to Israel with his family.
Rachel Goldberg emphasized her son’s ordinariness as his unique quality. He embodied both strengths and weaknesses, which made him relatable and genuine.
