Controversy Surrounds WNBA Finals Venue Decisions

Craig Carton’s Critique on WNBA Scheduling

During Monday’s episode of ‘The Craig Carton Show,’ Craig Carton expressed dissatisfaction with the handling of the WNBA Finals schedule and venue controversies. The Atlanta Dream found themselves in a difficult position concerning game locations.

Carton pointed out the oversight by the WNBA office when State Farm Arena chose to book other events over the possible Finals dates, forcing games into a smaller venue. He criticized the league for not proactively addressing the situation.

Venue Changes and Implications

Carton noted that the Atlanta Dream could not host their Finals games at State Farm Arena. The arena’s management opted for other events instead of preserving dates for the Dream. As a result, the Finals games will occur in a minor venue, the Gateway Center Arena.

This venue, referred to by Carton as a ‘glorified high school gymnasium,’ has a maximum capacity of 3,500, significantly fewer than other local options. Carton questioned why the league didn’t intervene, especially since the NBA owns it and could facilitate a solution.

Comparison with Other Events

Carton emphasized how the Atlanta Dream’s playoff run was overshadowed by other bookings, such as a concert by the artist or band SOMBR. He remarked that despite SOMBR’s notable following, the choice reflected poorly on the league’s planning.

According to Carton, the league’s focus on promoting narratives instead of star players led to declining viewer interest and suboptimal venue arrangements.

Impact on Viewership

Carton highlighted the WNBA’s struggle to retain viewers when marquee names like Caitlin Clark or Sophie Cunningham don’t participate. Only around half a million people tuned into the Atlanta Dream’s recent series against the New York Liberty.

Game 1 of the WNBA Finals is set to begin on Saturday, October 17. Carton’s observations suggest a need for the league to prioritize player promotion and audience engagement better.
