Kentucky Upsets LSU with Overtime Victory

1 hour ago 0

Kentucky pulled off a surprising victory over No. 10 LSU, winning 35-34 in overtime. This game marked the second loss for Lane Kiffin in his first year as head coach for the Tigers. The Wildcats forced overtime with a 33-yard field goal by Adam Zouagui in the final 12 seconds of regulation. In overtime, quarterback Kenneth Minchey secured the win with a successful two-point conversion. The crowd at Kroger Field erupted, rushing onto the field to celebrate the thrilling win.

The celebration came at a cost, as Kentucky received a $500,000 fine for the field-storming incident. Under the SEC’s policy, fines collected from these events go to the opposing school, meaning LSU will receive the penalty payment. The policy, in place since 2023, was updated for the 2025 season. Fines for rushing the field now start at $500,000, replacing the previous tiered system of $100,000 for a first offense, $250,000 for a second, and $500,000 for subsequent incidents.

SEC policy states that access to competition areas is restricted to players, coaches, officials, and designated personnel. Fans may only enter the field after the visiting team’s staff and game officials have safely exited. Last season, Mississippi State’s win over No. 12 Arizona resulted in the only $500,000 fine for field-storming against an SEC team.

Though Kentucky faces the financial penalty, LSU remains one of the wealthiest programs in college football. The Wall Street Journal ranked LSU at No. 4 in its valuation list, with the program worth over $1.5 billion. LSU expected significant success under Lane Kiffin’s leadership after he turned down Ole Miss. His seven-year contract with LSU begins at $13 million annually, with potential bonuses, according to ESPN reports from November 2025.

The victory is crucial for Kentucky, as they improve to 3-1 in the SEC and 5-1 overall. Ranked No. 15 in the latest AP Top 25 poll, Kentucky is aiming for a spot in the SEC Championship Game. In contrast, LSU, now 1-2 in the SEC, dropped to No. 22 in the polls following losses to Ole Miss and Kentucky. LSU looks to rebound on October 17 when they face No. 16 Mississippi State.
