Pope Leo XIV underwent a series of medical tests, including blood tests and a chest X-ray, to assess his recovery following lung surgery. The Vatican has confirmed that his recovery is proceeding as expected.

The statement from the Holy See Press Office noted that Pope Leo XIV’s night was calm at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. The 71-year-old Pope had thoracic surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung, where adenocarcinoma, a type of lung cancer, was identified. The doctors involved in the surgery have confirmed this diagnosis through tissue examination conducted during the operation.

The Holy Father has undergone respiratory physiotherapy and has begun walking around his room. He has resumed eating normally and had breakfast and lunch,” the Vatican statement attributed to Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora stated.

Pope Leo arrived at the Gemelli Polyclinic on October 13, 2026, for the operation. Although he spent approximately three hours in the operating room, the actual surgery lasted about 90 minutes. It was reported to be successful with no complications.

Prior to the surgery, Pope Leo XIV addressed the public, explaining that the lump in his lung was identified early and was in a favorable location for removal. He expressed his gratitude for the advice from his doctors and the support from the community.

The Vatican reported that Pope Leo XIV continues to progress in his recovery, having resumed normal eating habits and engaging in physical activity. The medical tests taken post-surgery show favorable results, contributing to the optimism surrounding his return to health.
