She described asking a male flight attendant to assist with placing her luggage in the overhead bin, explaining her pregnancy and advisement not to lift heavy items. However, the flight attendant declined her request and mentioned that if she couldn’t stow the bag herself, it would need to be checked. The airline’s name was not specified. Eventually, another passenger noticed the situation and offered help.

Elissa expressed her disbelief over the experience, stating, “I feel this lack of respect for pregnant women at the moment.”

Etiquette expert Diane Gottsman spoke to Fox News Digital about the incident. She emphasized that travelers should not assume flight attendants will handle their luggage. “They’re customer service providers,” Gottsman noted. “They want to make your travel comfortable and safe. They’re not baggage handlers.”

Gottsman also highlighted that airline and union policies often discourage flight attendants from lifting heavy bags due to safety concerns. She mentioned the flight attendant’s offer to check Elissa’s bag as an alternative.

“If you cannot lift your bags, then you should politely ask another passenger,” Gottsman advised.

In cases where passengers cannot lift their bags, Gottsman recommended considering checking those bags. She noted assistance from other passengers as acts of kindness rather than obligation.
